TRIP, a masterwork more than a decade in the making, take listeners through the unique odyssey of love and loss, heartbreak and discovery that Jhené has endured over the past decade, witnessed closely by her loyal fans. It is a tribute to the changes that have rocked her life and career these past years – the tragic loss of her brother to cancer in 2012, and her journey to try to manage her grief through relationships, substances and art. Guests include by Big Sean, John Mayer, Swae Lee, Kurupt, Chris Brown, and Brandy.
TRIP was introduced by a 23-minute short film which Jhené wrote and directed, with help from her friend, screenwriter Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip). Jhené has also issued a touching “mission statement,” that details the inspiration for, and intent of her massive project. “In sharing this,” she writes, “I hope to inspire others to share their own mistakes, imperfections and fears… I believe in doing so we can understand each other better and realize we are more alike than different. I hope to inspire others to share their grief and pain because I believe suffering can be alleviated when we understand we are not going through any of it alone.”
Containing 22 new songs and clocking in at over 90 minutes, TRIP was unanimously acclaimed upon its release. “TRIP is about more than chasing love or a temporary high,” NPR Music noted. “It's the confessional story of [Jhené’s] grappling with the nature of desire rooted in all human experience as she measures her mistakes and awakens to her own power. And she's a brave soul — equal parts vulnerable and visionary — for taking us along for the ride.” Newsweek praised the album as “a beautiful ode to dealing with grief and finally letting go of the past in order to move forward.” This past Sunday, in the Skin Deep column of its Fashion & Style section, the New York Times profiled Jhené‘s skin care regimen.
TRIP is the long-awaited follow-up to Jhené Aiko’s critically hailed debut albumSouled Out, which entered the R&B Albums chart at #1 upon its release in 2014, on Artclub/ARTium/Def Jam Recordings. “Jhené Aiko transforms heartbreak, tragedy and existential crises into a dreamy escape,” raved TIME magazine, with Pitchfork declaring, “[the album] surges with a lush, aquatic gravitas, distinctly R&B but never confined to genre conventions.” The LP’s first single and video, "The Pressure" has over 11.1 million YouTube views to date.
Souled Out took flight on the strength of Jhené’s phenomenal #1 debut EP, Sail Out (2013), the biggest-selling EP in Def Jam history.
